Traditionally I am a Liberal supporter, but this time I’m voting for Vancouver Centre Green Party candidate Adriane Carr.  How traditional, you may ask?  Well for starters, I am even a blood relative of one of Canada’s most famous Liberal Prime Ministers, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the guy on our five dollar bill.  What’s more, I’ve worked on Parliament Hill for several Liberal Senators, among them, the late Sheila Finestone, a feisty champion of women’s rights.  So voting for someone who belongs to another party isn’t something I treat lightly.   But there are times when devotion to democracy’s integrity supersedes blind allegiance to a party, any party.  Such a moment arrived for me some two weeks ago.

After lobbying within the Liberal Party for substantive reforms to our democratic system and then seeing the Liberal election platform which offered so very little in this regard, I came to the sad conclusion that unless I spoke up and publicly declared my intent to vote Green in this election, nothing was apt to change and our democracy would remain in peril.  And if I may say, Liberal MP Hedy Fry had 18 years to help correct the problem, but did little to distinguish herself in this regard.  So will voting for Adriane only help a Conservative to win in Vancouver Centre?  No because Adriane is in a tight second place battle with Hedy Fry, while the Conservative is in third and the NDP candidate is in a distant fourth.  If anything, voting for the NDP in this riding actually helps the Conservative cause.  So don’t allow yourself to be taken in by the spin that says voting anything but Liberal will help a Conservative win in Vancouver Centre.  It is simply not true.  Voting for Adriane can both help to fix our failing democracy while also preventing Stephen Harper from obtaining a majority government.  That’s more than good enough for me.

“From a young age I have been interested in Canadian politics, and the value of public service. To that end I have had the great fortune to work for some amazing Canadians including former Prime Minister Paul Martin (when he was the Minister of Finance) and former Minister of Public Works Scott Brison. Both of these individuals are people I respect and admire. It was from these experiences that I learned the importance of supporting people who shared my values and love of Canada.

My decision to support Adriane Carr was based on my belief that she, like the others I have worked for, can make a positive change in our country.

She is a champion for the homeless, seniors, our environment and our health care system. Her integrity is unquestioned and her commitment to Vancouver Centre is unwavering. We need a green voice in Ottawa, we need Adriane Carr, and I am proud to support her.”

I’ve spent almost a week in Vancouver Centre helping to elect Adriane Carr as one of Canada’s first Green Party MPs.  Here on Vancouver Island, polls indicate that the voters of Saanich-Gulf Islands are ready to send Green Party leader Elizabeth May to Ottawa.  Both Adriane and Elizabeth are in tight races with Liberal or Conservative incumbents.

In Vancouver I have spent most of my time street canvassing with Adriane, who I have known since I ran for the Green Party of BC provincially in 2001.  I count Adriane Carr and her husband Paul George among my personal friends.  She is a tireless worker, not only on environmental issues, but on social justice issues, and would be a strong voice for local issues in Ottawa.

The response in Vancouver is amazing.  So many voters, from youth to seniors, of both genders, and a large number of our GLBTQ community are saying that it’s time.  Hedy Fry has been around for long enough.  With Adriane Carr as your MP, you will get so much more – not only support for issues specific to our community, but for the social justice, environmental and democracy issues that are important to all Canadians.

I am thrilled to be supporting Adriane’s campaign. Over the last six years, I have worked with Adriane and witnessed her tireless commitment to her work on the front lines of the campaign and against the odds. Finally, this election, the race is so close in Vancouver Centre that residents in this riding need to understand they have the exciting opportunity to change the way we do politics on the Hill by opening the door to views beyond the three-way party system currently restricting us, for a broader spectrum of voices to represent all Canadians in Ottawa.

This is the election, this is the riding. Vancouver Centre can proudly elect Adriane Carr, the nation’s first elected Green MP, to parliament. It really is happening here!

“My name is Vina Starr. I am a native Canadian and retired lawyer and I will be voting for Adriane Carr on May 2.  I have been following the policy announcements of the other parties, and I want you to know I am very proud of the work Elizabeth May and Adriane Carr are doing.  It won’t be easy and it will take time, but it will be worth it. Please tell Adriane – keep your chin up darling, chin up and thumbs up!”

“We need Adriane in Ottawa to be our conscience for the environment, and lead civil intelligent debate on this and other topics important for Canada. We also need her there to help make Vancouver the greenest city on the planet by 2020. Let’s make a difference, make history, and elect Adriane as the first Green MP in Canada!”

I’m supporting Adriane Carr in Vancouver Centre because if we claim that we’ll be the greenest city in the world by 2020, we should have a Green MP. Adriane is the one.  Adriane has a powerful mind and is strong on the issues of concern to people in Vancouver Centre and Canada-wide.  Her arts policy is fabulous.  That’s a good enough reason for me to vote Green.

But I think it’s time we look at the candidate, not just vote for a party. Adriane is the best candidate for Vancouver Centre. I supported her in the last race and I’m pleased to support her again. I want her to win.
